New school year and a great Thanksgiving Feast!

by Steven V on January 12, 2012

Thanks to the strong growth of the fraternity over the past three years this year’s Thanksgiving required the rental of a tent!  As you can see in the header image, a tent was added to the front patio to offer enough seating for our growing membership.  The start of the academic year brought new members, tailgates, help sessions, and social gatherings. This Fall, 69 new members were recruited to Psi Omega, bringing our total membership to over 160 members. Recruitment success can be attributed to strong leadership and active engagement of first year dental students through social and academic offerings.

Dr. Gabriella Weiss helps D1s during the Psi Omega Oral Anatomy Review

Our President, Brandon Kroffke, D4, pushed connecting students with the greater dental community by organizing learning enrichment lunch-and-learns and company-sponsored tailgates at every Buckeye football home game. Additionally, the entire D1 class was invited to the house for the Oral Anatomy Review Session. This event has been coordinated with professors Dr. Gabriella Weiss, DDS, and Dr. Janet Bolina, DDS, to offer one-on-one help from upperclassmen Psi O’s to help master tooth identification and head and neck anatomy. These traditions continue to engage interested students and demonstrate professionalism amongst our members.

Second Year Psi Omegas celebrate a night off from exams and studying at Thanksgiving

The Annual Thanksgiving Feast has traditionally been a time for our House Company to honor the Psi Omega student members for their dedication and participation. In years past we have hosted the party in our great room. However, Psi O’s membership has exceeded the capacity of the house. This year, we erected a tent on our patio with space heaters to accommodate the more than 150 members and alumni attending the dinner. The newly appointed Dean of The Ohio State University College of Dentistry, Patrick Lloyd, DDS MS, was the guest of honor.
Turkey with all the fixings was catered to the event with ample celebratory beverages. To commemorate the special occasion, Alex Smith, D3, brewed a batch of his famous Autumn Amber Ale. The event was a huge success and was a splendid setoff to the holiday season.

Wrapping up the quarter, Psi O’s celebrated with Christmas music, Holiday spirit, and of course, the tackiest Christmas attire they could muster for our Annual Tacky Christmas Sweater Party. This year’s party was held at the Village Idiot with DJ Addison pushing the beat. This event was open to all dental students.

Summer is back in Columbus in full force, bringing many welcomed changes.  Reduced class loads for the D2s and D3s, House remodeling and repairs as rooms open up and are turned over for new occupants, almost daily use of the Psi Omega grill, and gearing up for a new incoming class of D1s.  This year we were sad to see 9 of our in-house members leave from graduating/moving, but our House Manager Max Grosel has already filled each and every empty room for upcoming school year!  Included in the 9 new roommates are 7 Class of 2015 freshman!  It will be the highest number for any single one class in the house in recent memory, they will have a huge advantage as they tackle this new challenge in their lives together.

Upperclassman Max Grosel helps prepare for the crown casting session

With the class of 2013 being close to 75 members this year, the annual crown casting help session had to be expanded a bit.  This year we want to send a HUGE shout out thanks to Dave Kiser from Slagle-Kiser Dental Ceramics, Geno Neverov from Crown and Bridge Laboratory, Doug Durthaler from Dental Precision Lab, and Ken Mitchell from Rymac Restoration!  They provided some great guidance in waxing up and casting the crowns, and they all turned out fantastic!  Only a couple of errors that were quickly remedied by our members staying the labs until past midnight two nights in a row.  Thanks for all your help!

Graduating senior Dr. Greg Snevel shows off his senior gift

This past May we hosted our annual Senior send-off dinner at the Elevator Brewery again, even larger and more boisterous than last year’s (but this time none of the other patrons complained)!  Congratulations to senior members Drs. Dennis Benton, Erin Deal, Sam Domiczek, Brooke Fender, Celia Fenell, Will Leffler, Scott Malavich, Krist Rioch, Alicia Thomas, Greg Snevel, and Megan Ursick, as well as three RDH seniors Casey Zmudzinski, Robert Darr, and Ashleigh Gillaugh!  We will miss all of you and wish you the best of luck in your professional endeavors, don’t be strangers!

As seniors graduate and people move on in their roles at Psi Omega, we also welcome in the new officers for the 2011-2012 school year, please see the Member’s Page for a complete list of current officers!  This year we had so much interest in officer position that we changed many of the positions to Co-Chairs.  With the number of members steadily increasing it is becoming more important to have help in organizing and communicating with officers and members.  It is a very motivated group this year, we’re excited for the possibilities of another big year.

D1s enjoy their first senior send-off dinner at Elevator

We will be using the more laid-back atmosphere of summer to prepare for this year’s football tailgate season, as well as rush for the incoming class.  Stay tuned and keep your eyes on the Calendar for information regarding upcoming events.  You can also always email PsiOmegaOSU@gmail.com if you have any questions or need to get in touch with someone.  Have a great summer, go bucks!

Happy New Year from Psi Omega

by Steven V on January 3, 2011

Another busy year came to a close for Psi Omega at Ohio State, and 2010 ushered in some of the most active years of this chapter in recent memory.  For the incoming class of 2014, 68 of the 106 students joined Psi Omega, a record since the class sizes at Ohio State fell to ~100 a year!  We hosted a tailgate at every home football game, generously sponsored by local dental supply and service companies.

Big thanks to Zimmerman, Boltz, and Company, Benco, Henry Schein, Dentsply, Wetzel Insurance, and their representatives for making 2010′s football season such a success.  On top of the sponsored tailgates, we hosted dinner and learns on every Wednesday night of the quarter.  Many of the same companies came to the house and provided dinner and drinks while showing us the new and upcoming dental technologies that are catching on in the field outside of school.  It is always a great opportunity to learn what is being applied in real-world, helping to supplement our studies and prepare us for when we graduate.

Our annual Thanksgiving dinner at the house was the largest ever, hosting more than 130 members and alumni.  Both wings of the house were used to seat everyone, luckily we didn’t run out of food (or wine)!  The distinguished guest table (house company and alumni) was the center of the party with over 20 in attendance.

The alumni table headed by Drs. Postle, Hinton, Sweeney, Bernsdorf, Lowry, and others

The live-in members of Psi Omega threw an excellent party and occasionally found time to get a drink themselves and have some of the catered food, though the dishes did take several days!

After the short Thanksgiving break finals were quickly upon Psi Omega members.  The house quieted down and got to work studying and anticipating a long and much deserved break from school.  But before the break officially kicked off, Psi Omega threw it’s annual Tacky Christmas Sweater Party at a local bar.  The first year class brought out some really tacky sweaters, some said they bought theirs months in advance.  You can see some of the outfits in this post’s banner picture.

Everyone is started to file back into the house and are gearing up for another year of dental school.  Coming up soon are several events, including Initiation for the 72 new members of Psi Omega, a continuing education event with Zimmerman, Boltz, and Company, and the quarterly party (no word on the theme yet from Alex Smith, he is still brainstorming).

Please keep in touch, the New Year’s resolution for the fraternity is to connect with more alumni, if that happens to be you, please email us at PsiOmegaOSU@gmail.com!  Happy New Year!

Goodbye summer, hello football!

September 14, 2010

As the temperatures begin to slowly fall the AC is switched off, jeans are a more popular fashion statement, and Aspen is much more comfortable.  The picture above was one of his rare moments outside in the summer when he wasn’t being walked, the poor guy!  For the first year dental students this summer was [...]
